Collaborating in Reviewer

How to use Juno to streamline the multi-step review process.

Updated over 4 months ago

Important Note: Reviewer is built to streamline the complex tax‑return review process, not to replace human judgement. Upload a draft return from your tax software before using Reviewer so that Juno can compare the source data against your draft return.

Using the Notes column

When you open a return in Reviewer, every field in the Source to Return and Gotcha Checks tabs has a Notes column. The notes column is where you communicate with your team. As you review, type a brief note explaining what you did or what needs to be done. Notes could include:

  • Corrections you made in the tax software (for example, “Adjusted Box 1 wages to match W‑2”)

  • Questions for a colleague (“Please confirm basis on 1099‑B”)

  • Reminders to yourself (“Need to request updated brokerage statement”)

Each note is tied to a specific field, so other reviewers see exactly what you’re referring to. Because notes are visible to everyone, they serve as a lightweight chat thread attached to a particular data point. This makes it easy for a senior reviewer to understand your thought process and decide whether anything else is needed.

Using Mark as Reviewed as a checklist

To the right of each field is a Mark as Reviewed checkbox. This column helps you and your team track progress. When you finish reviewing a field, click the checkbox to mark it as reviewed. You can use this in two ways:

  • Personal checklist: When you perform a first pass, use the checkbox to remind yourself which items you’ve already checked. You can leave some unchecked if you need to come back later.

  • Team indicator: After your first pass, the senior reviewer can open the return and quickly see which items have been reviewed and which still need attention. This keeps everyone on the same page.

In multi‑step reviews, the status of each checkbox lets people hand work off without missing anything. A preparer can complete an initial pass, marking items and leaving notes, and a senior reviewer can then confirm each marked item or uncheck anything that needs a second look.

Reviewer highlights disparities between the source data and the draft return and surfaces Gotcha Checks based on common tax issues. Next to each flagged item is a Review checkbox. When you investigate the issue and address it (for example, by fixing a mismatch in your tax software or confirming that the difference is correct), click the checkbox to record that it has been reviewed. You can also leave a note explaining your resolution.

Review checks are especially useful when multiple people are working on the same return. Everyone can see which issues remain open and which have been addressed. They also provide a clear audit trail in case questions arise later.

Conversation threads

Notes aren’t just one‑off comments; they support conversation threads. If a colleague leaves a note, you can click on it and reply directly. This threaded conversation stays attached to the specific field, creating a clear history of decisions and questions. In a multi‑step review process, preparers, managers and partners can all contribute to the same thread, mark items as reviewed and update notes as needed.

Use threads to:

  • Answer clarifying questions from team members

  • Document why a particular decision was made

  • Flag items for a partner’s approval

  • Close the loop when an issue has been resolved

The combination of Notes, Review Checks, and the Mark as Reviewed column gives your team a simple but powerful way to collaborate without leaving the review workflow.

Summary

Reviewer’s collaborative features are designed to upskill your staff and help reduce bottlenecks. After generating a draft return, let preparers complete a first pass in Reviewer, leaving notes and review checks. Senior reviewers can then open the same return, see all notes, use the Mark as Reviewed column to sign off on each field and address any remaining issues. By using the Notes column, Mark as Reviewed and Review Checks consistently, teams can work together efficiently and ensure that nothing slips through the cracks.
